Internet, Computers and Technology ? Short-term (2 weeks) internet ...

I'll be back in Cyprus next month and staying at my Aunt's in Kato Polemidia for 2 weeks who doesn't have internet... and I may have to do some online work so does anyone have a suggestion for wireless internet there - is it possible to get a USB kit for internet or an internet card?

Not sure, in the past I was able to pick up some CityCell wireless - but the signal was very faint and I see on their website it doesn't intend to cover the area...

Does anyone know the best option?

HTC One X and One S Wifi gotcha down? Give this a try

Android Central

Some folks are reporting that their shiny new HTC One X and One S phones are experiencing a rather irritating Wifi bug. The glitch in question results in the phones disconnecting from certain Wifi networks while idle, and being unable to reconnect until the phone is woken up.

Hopefully HTC will have a fix ready for customers soon -- we're hearing that it's no longer an issue in the recently-leaked One X 1.28 firmware -- but in the meantime there's a pretty easy work-around for both phones. Manually assigning your phone an IP address on your Wifi network, rather than using DHCP, seems to squish the issue. If you already know how to do that, then off you go, we'll wait. If not, we've got a full walkthrough after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Note my way: Chris Parsons

Samsung Galaxy Note

As much as some cried foul on the Samsung Galaxy Note because of its size and of course, the stylus it is in my opinion one of the best Android devices out there. I could have chose from any number of devices on the market, including the Samsung Galaxy Nexus but I chose the Galaxy Note, in fact -- I fell in love with it. And no, I really don't mind TouchWiz at all. If you're wanting to know how I have mine set up, jump on past the break for the full details.

We Are Our Scores: The Aspirational Self

scoreboardI left off last time talking about how gamification and the Quantified Self -- the use of sensors and devices to gather and analyze as much personal numeric data as possible for new insights into the self--can help us have fun while getting closer to our ideal selves. It?s time to explore how that last idea has evolved in the past few years and how savvy entrepreneurs are putting it to work. Each of us has that picture of who we want to be and where we want to go. This is the version of ourselves we want the world to see. Convincing others that there is no gap between that image and our real selves used to be the domain of public relations professionals and doting parents. But in this era of social networks and constant connectivity, we all take the reins of our own reputations.

With $1M And An Alpha, Leaf Aims To Overhaul The Payments Experience For Local Merchants

Screen Shot 2012-04-13 at 7.09.47 AMLeaf, a Cambridge, Mass.-based startup, is aiming to make the experience of paying in a shop more modern with paperless receipts for customers and transaction data in the cloud for merchants. Backed with $1 million in seed funding, the company just kicked off an alpha with more than a dozen merchants in Boston. It enters a super competitive and complicated space with many other players like PayPal, Intuit, Square, which has its own Pay With Square service, and Stockholm's iZettle. So first off, Leaf is not a mobile wallet. It's not a dongle. It's a service that's either an app integrated into a merchant's existing point-of-sale terminal or that's part of a special terminal that Leaf leases for $20 a month. There will also be a consumer-facing app that you can download in two weeks for the iPhone and Android devices.

Court Rules Software Not Protected By Fed Crime Laws, Overturns Conviction of Goldman Engineer

High frequency trading-thumb-225x149Before leaving Goldman Sachs to earn a millionaire?s salary with Chicago High Frequency Trading (HFT) startup Teza Technologies, Sergey Aleynikov made one last transaction. At 5:20pm on his last day, just before his going-away party, Aleynikov uploaded 500,000 lines of encrypted source code from the Wall Street firm's proprietary HFT system to a server located in Germany. Following the clandestine upload, Aleynikov deleted the encryption program, wiped his command history, and headed to the party. Although Aleynikov later managed to download the source code to his home computer in New Jersy before flying to Chicago, he was apprehended by the FBI while returning through Newark Liberty International Airport. But after his conviction at trial and imprisonment during the appeals process (his dual US-Russian citizenship presented a flight risk), Aleynikov is now a free man. The reasons why touch the entire software industry.
