India v Pakistan ? 1st ODI ? Live Cricket Score and Match Update ? Dhoni steadies India after Junaid strike

Rampaging Pakistani pacer Junaid Khan tore through the earlier part of the Indian batting order, and appeared to have put the hosts in a tight fix at one point in the 1st ODI at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai, today on December 30 ? however, Indian skipper MS Dhoni led from the front and staged a successful comeback, striking an unbeaten century to take the hosts up to 227 for 6 by the end of 50 overs.

With the T20I series having ended on a level 1-1, both teams went into the match eager to secure an ODI series win in the ice-breaking tour. The match kicked off with Pakistan winning the toss and choosing to field first, and Junaid Khan (9-1-43-4) did not disappoint the Men in Green at the start.

The opening duo of Gautam Gambhir (8) and Virender Sehwag (4) had barely settled down at the crease when Junaid Khan struck, to take Sehwag out of the game in the 4th over. Towering Pakistani pacer Mohammad Irfan (9-2-58-1) then proceeded to polish off the second opener, sending Gambhir packing in the 5th over, and India were down by two men.

Junaid Khan, however, wasn?t done yet, and managed to send out the top, and earlier part of the middle order, without allowing them to move beyond single digits. The 6th over resulted in the dismissals of both Yuvraj Singh (2) and Virat Kohli (0), and by the time Junaid had disposed of Rohit Sharma (4) in the 10th over, India were at a seemingly hopeless 29 for 5.

However, in a knock that is likely to stave off some of his more severe critics of late, Dhoni asserted his reputation as a composed captain, and smashed a massive unbeaten 113 to put the Men in Blue back in the game. The Indian skipper was joined by Suresh Raina (43) for a 73-run partnership for the 6th wicket, which got the team total into triple figures and up to 102.

Raina was eventually dislodged by Pakistan skipper Mohammad Hafeez (10-2-26-1), but Dhoni powered on, setting up an unbeaten 125-run partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin (31*). The skipper managed to pull off a successful recovery in the end, and the combined efforts of Dhoni and Ashwin got India up to a final total of 227 for 6 by the end of 50 overs.
