Hogs get 11th win, 29-16 over K-State in Cotton (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? Joe Adams and Jarius Wright quickly found themselves on the field as freshmen for Bobby Petrino's first team at Arkansas four years ago.

"They had no choice," Petrino said. "Not as big and as fast as they are right now, but they did a nice job. There were a few times that season where they weren't sure if they broke the huddle and went to the right or broke the huddle and went to the left."

Wright and Adams are leaving 1-2 on Arkansas' career receptions list after three consecutive bowl games, the last when the No. 7 Razorbacks defeated No. 11 Kansas State 29-16 in the Cotton Bowl on Friday night to tie the school record with their 11th victory.

The All-SEC receivers both scored in the finale, Adams on another explosive punt return and Wright on a 45-yard catch.

"It's a huge deal for us," Wright said. "We always talked about winning 11 games."

Arkansas was 5-7 when they were freshmen, then 8-5 before 10 wins last season with a Sugar Bowl appearance. The only previous years Arkansas teams won 11 games were in 1964 and 1977.

The only losses for these Razorbacks (11-2) were to No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama, their SEC West rivals who will play for the BCS national championship Monday night.

Adams tied an SEC record with his fourth punt return for a touchdown this season, a 51-yarder early in the second quarter that gave Arkansas a 10-0 lead before it even had a first down.

"Joe Adams has made big plays for us all year long," said All-SEC quarterback Tyler Wilson, who threw two touchdown passes after that. "We were struggling offensively until he sparked us."

It was the first punt return for a touchdown in the Cotton Bowl in 51 years.

"It was another one of those where you just go, `Wow!'" Petrino said. "You could see when he made the catch he had in mind what he was going to do."

After fielding the ball near midfield, Adams took a few steps back before squirting through a gap past several defenders. He got all the way to the opposite sideline, his path cleared by one last downfield block from Javontee Herndon.

"It obviously made a major difference," Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. "The players were probably tired of me talking about being able to contain Joe Adams and not let him bounce the ball outside. Sure enough he bounced it outside."

The last punt return for a touchdown in the Cotton Bowl was by a Razorback. When Lance Alworth had a 49-yard return in a 7-6 loss to Duke in the 1961 game.

"To get this program consistently in the top 10, in BCS bowl games, great bowl games like the Cotton Bowl, hopefully in the top five in the country with 11 wins, it means so much to me personally, and to this group of seniors," defensive end Jake Bequette said. "It's just been such a fun ride."

Kansas State (10-3) also was trying to match its school record with 11 victories, but still finished a surprising season in Snyder's second Wildcats turnaround. K-State won 11 games six times during a seven-year span in Snyder's first tenure before his three-year retirement, and almost reached that mark again in his third season back.

Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein tied the Big 12 record with his 27th rushing touchdown this season and matched the FBS record for quarterbacks.

"It's overshadowed by our ability as a group. We came up short," Klein said. "My heart just goes out to our seniors. We weren't able to send them out the right way."

After being held to 15 yards on 12 carries in the first half, Klein finished the opening drive of the third quarter with a 6-yard TD run that got the Wildcats to 19-16.

That matched the Big 12 record for rushing touchdowns held by 1998 Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams of Texas. The only other FBS quarterback with 27 rushing touchdowns in a season was Ricky Dobbs for Navy in 2009.

Wilson, who threw for a school-record 510 yards in a win over Texas A&M at Cowboys Stadium three months ago, was 20 of 31 for 216 yards against Kansas State. Wright, who had 13 catches for a record 287 yards against the Aggies, made three catches for 88 yards in the Cotton Bowl.

The Cotton Bowl was the only non-BCS game with both teams in the top 15 of the Bowl Championship Series standings ? Arkansas came in sixth, Kansas State eighth. It also is the only bowl featuring the SEC versus the Big 12, the top two conferences in the BCS computer rankings.

Arkansas led 19-0 on Wright's 45-yard catch with 4 minutes left in the first half.

Kansas State, which has lost its last four bowl games since beating Arizona State in the 2002 Holiday Bowl, blocked the extra point and Nigel Malone returned it for two points.

It was 19-9 at halftime after Klein threw a 3-yard TD pass to Andrew McDonald with 26 seconds left in the first half. That score was set up after Wilson was sacked and fumbled at the Razorbacks 13.

Arkansas led 3-0 after Bequette sacked Klein and forced a fumble. Tenarius Wright recovered at the Kansas State 13.

"We got off to an awfully bad start and really couldn't overcome the damage that we did," Snyder said. "And most of it was pretty obvious."

Ramnit`s heist bags 45,000 Facebook passwords

Ramnit?s command and control center is visible and accessible, and the security experts were able to determine the precise number of Facebook victims, which consisted of 69 percent from the UK, 27 percent from France and 4 percent from other countries.

When Ramnit first started causing mischief in 2010 it was considered as a low-level threat, comments SearchSecurity.com.

That assessment has changed. Ramnit?s operators were able to graduate from an older generation of techniques to infect files to morph it into something more powerful, adding Zeus source code to the mix. Trusteer, another security company, warned that the worm had acquired the ability to inject HTML code into a web browser.

A worm is a type of malware that secretly integrates itself into program or data files, and infects more files each time the host program is run. Ramnit can infect Windows executable files, HTML files and other file types.

Ramnit?s subsequent target was finance, bypassing two-factor authentication and transaction signing systems. In gaining remote access to financial institutions, Ramnit was able to compromise online banking sessions and was able to penetrate corporate networks.

Even before the latest Facebook heist, Seculert, using a sinkhole security tool, counted 800,000 machines as infected with Ramnit from September to the end of December 2011.

Ramnit?s presence is not immediately obvious. The worrisome nature of Ramnit is compounded by the fact, say experts, that users tend to use the same password for a number of web-based services, which may include not only Facebook but their mail, a VPN, and others..

Blogger reactions to the news have ranged from ?Change your passwords, and often!? to ?Don?t click any links, never, no matter from who or how interesting!?

Considering the very definition of social networks and why they are used, that kind of advice may be timely but curiously counter to the whole point. Suspecting friends and relatives of having virus-choked messages and afraid to share links for fear of infection run counter to the reason why users sign on to social networks. Behavioral trends and countertrends will get interesting too.

Another troubling sign of the times is what cybercriminals now see as choice game. E-mail worms are so Yesterday, say computer security experts.

Malware writers are replacing old-school worms transmitted via email with their malware now targeted for social-networks.

Microsoft's Windows 8 Will Feature Robust Storage Spaces

Microsoft's Windows 8 will offer a new feature, Storage Spaces, designed to both protect data and organize physical drives for maximum use.

In a Jan. 5 posting on the ?Building Windows 8? blog, Rajeev Nagar, a group program manager on the Windows Storage and File System team, broke down the two overarching themes behind Storage Spaces: one, the ability to organize multiple physical disks into storage pools, and two, the use of virtual disks (which he refers to as ?spaces?).

A Windows 8 user will need only one physical disk to create a storage pool, although that will prevent the creation of mirrored or parity spaces capable of data redundancy in the event of some catastrophic failure. According to Nagar, there is ?no requirement for an even or odd number of physical disks.?

Those physical disks can be connected through USB, SATA (Serial ATA) or SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), he added. ?Storage Spaces delivers on diverse requirements that can span deployments ranging from a single PC in the home, up to a very large-scale enterprise datacenter,? he wrote. ?Once physical disks have been added to a pool, they are no longer directly usable by the rest of Windows?they have been virtualized, that is, dedicated to the pool in their entirety.?

Thanks to something called thin provisioning, raw storage capacity translates into a much larger mirrored space?in the blog?s example, some 4TB of raw physical space transforms into 10TB of capacity once it?s been added to the pool. ?Thin provisioning ensures that actual capacity is reserved for the space only when you decide to use it,? he wrote. ?Previously allocated physical capacity can be reclaimed safely whenever files are deleted, or whenever an application decides that such capacity is no longer needed.?

Should a pool disk fail, Storage Space can reallocate data. ?There?s another resiliency attribute, called parity,? he added, ?which directs Storage Spaces to store some redundancy information alongside user data contained within the space, thereby enabling automatic data reconstruction in the event of physical disk failure.??

Microsoft is unveiling a flurry of Windows 8 features in the ramp-up to the operating system?s release sometime in the latter half of 2012. In a separate posting on the blog this week, for example, the Windows team also detailed Windows 8?s streamlined ability to reset or refresh a PC experiencing issues. Resetting a Windows 8 PC will, obviously, wipe out all the user?s personal data while reinstalling the operating system; refreshing it, on the other hand, will preserve all that personal data, along with key settings and any ?Metro?-style apps.

Microsoft will almost certainly offer additional Windows 8 glimpses during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which is slated to kick off with a Jan. 9 keynote speech by CEO Steve Ballmer.

Obama to usher in election year with eye on Republicans (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama will start setting the tone on Wednesday for an election-year strategy that attempts to capitalize on voter frustration with Congress but which could also mean further legislative gridlock as he seeks a second term.

Stepping back into the 2012 campaign spotlight just a day after Iowa held the first contest of Republican presidential hopefuls, Obama will travel to Ohio, a state considered crucial to his re-election chances.

The Democratic president, fresh from a 10-day Hawaii vacation, will make the case for his economic policies as he tries to draw a contrast with Republican candidates vying to face him on the November ballot.

But after a year of bruising legislative battles, he is expected to keep the heat on congressional Republicans who he has accused of obstructing his economic recovery efforts and whom he blames for much of the dysfunction in Washington.

Obama is expected to keep hammering on populist themes, portraying himself as a champion of the middle class, and aides say he will roll out further executive orders to create jobs to

show voters he will take steps on his own if necessary.

"If Congress refuses to act and if Republicans choose the path of obstruction rather than cooperation, then the president is not going to sit here," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

President Harry Truman railed against a "do-nothing" Congress on his way to re-election in 1948, but analysts say Obama faces risks if he tries to emulate that.

They warn that a go-it-alone approach can only yield small-bore projects of modest benefit and that Obama could alienate some independent and moderate voters if they blame him for increasing partisan rancor.

Republicans, who see Obama's economic policies as ineffective and his spending plans as wasteful, accuse the president of campaigning instead of governing and have signaled continued resistance to his approach.

William Galston, a senior fellow at Washington's Brookings Institution, said Obama needed to be seen rolling up his sleeves and engaging directly with his Republican foes instead of distancing himself from them.

"There are very serious problems facing the country and I think the people are likely to believe the president out to be part of the solution," he said.

WINNING STRATEGY?

Despite that, Obama's aides believe they have a winning strategy after he faced down Republicans in December to gain a two-month extension of expiring payroll tax cuts.

The White House now believes the president has the upper hand politically in efforts to turn it into a full-year extension of the tax breaks, which independent economists say are vital to the U.S. economic recovery.

Though public discontent over persistently high unemployment has kept Obama's approval ratings below 50 percent, public perceptions of Congress are far worse after a bitter summer dispute over debt and government spending.

Now, Obama's aides believe cracks may be forming in Republican opposition to some parts of his long-stalled $447 billion jobs package as lawmakers begin to worry their own re-election prospects may be jeopardized by failure to act on job creation.

But Obama will face major challenges in maintaining any momentum in the months ahead, with Republicans reluctant to offer Obama any further legislative successes that might contribute to his re-election.

On top of that, Obama's aides appear at times to be struggling with his re-election message.

After a White House official told reporters at a briefing in Honolulu over the weekend that working with Congress was "no longer a requirement" once the payroll tax cut is extended beyond February, senior administration officials rushed to insist that Obama had no intention of ignoring lawmakers.

Still, many analysts see a congressional stalemate likely to persist until after the election.

Meantime, Obama plans to take his case directly to the electorate in a series of jobs and economy speeches around the country, what aides call an enhanced "ground game." He will speak on Wednesday at a high school in a Cleveland suburb.

Work is also under way on his January 24 State of the Union speech, which is expected to echo the populist themes of social justice he laid out in a speech in Kansas in early December.
